Details on how to obtain GPS waypoints using a Garmin eTrex Venture can be found here. Tina Notas, our Sustainability Coordinator, used a Garmin eTrex Vista HC to collect over 100 waypoints on campus between fall 2018 and spring 2019. With WAAS enabled on her receiver, she can expect the accuracy of the points to be within 3 meters. These points were then exported to Google Maps, to visualize and edit features (example below).
The waypoints for the trees were exported as a .kml file from Google Earth, and then imported into ArcGIS Pro. The trees were explored in Layout view with an OpenStreetMap basemap.
Last, the .kml files were added to Google Maps, and used to create the embedded map shown below.
