It is common to find spreadsheets with addresses or location information that would be useful to map. The process of assigning latitude and longitude locations based on addresses is called geocoding. One of many good resources for geocoding is Google MyMaps. The webmap designed below used information on school schootings in Canada from Wikipedia, which were pasted into a Google Sheet and imported to Google Maps. Whereas school shootings in the U.S. are widespread, only nineteen cases, beginning in 1884 are listed for Canada. Clearly all information should be verified and validated before further study on the distribution of shootings.
As another example of applying Google MyMaps, I looked at non-compliance with environmental law in Newark, New Jersey. The map below illustrates ten facilities that the EPA has identified as exhibiting “significant non-compliance.”
The map below illustrates the schools in Camden, New Jersey by school type.
In the following map, I display data obtained from the Gun Violence Archives, to explore gun violence against children from 2016 to February 2019.
